Winter Wedding Style at The Ednam House Hotel

We were delighted when Andrea Benn got in touch about her wedding in early December at the lovely Ednam House Hotel in nearby Kelso in the Scottish Borders.  Here are a few images from the day showing her wonderland winter wedding style, including the natural Scottish palette of her bouquet and a veritable forest of twiglights!

Andrea’s bouquet combined white anenomes, cream roses, freesias and heather in a hand tied posy, finished with pearls and cream lace.  She wore a stunning dress with lace bodice and a fabulous fur wrap.

Andrea wanted to create a sparkling, wintery theme for the dining room with plenty of candles.  Several of the tables were decorated with beech and twisted willow branches and finished off with hanging jars and votives.  We put arrangements of vintage coloured roses at the base of each centrepiece and further candles in stemmed glasses.

Andrea was keen to use a number of different accessories for the dining tables.  The long oval top table was set with two-tier candelabras.  They contained a mixture of small posies of flowers and candles.

On other dining tables glass domes were used to hold the bridesmaids bouquets.

January is a great time to recharge and plan the next adventure, but it’s also a chance to look back and recall the old year.  So before the moment passes, here are some great memories of 2011 and some of the lovely Borders wedding venue couples. I feel very lucky to have been able to work with them and see them celebrate the start of the next chapter of their lives.

Things got off to an early start in February last year with David and Niccie who came up from the Manchester area to celebrate their fabulous wedding weekend at Hoscote.

Hoscote also made the perfect location for Alison and Paul’s spring wedding.  All the spring flowers were out and we put lovely magnolia buds, beech twigs and small orchids in her natural bouquet.

Guests from further afield can struggle to find your Scottish wedding venue, so how about a custom wedding map? Cute Maps are a new twist on wedding stationery that’s both practical and pretty! They’re designed by artist and illustrator Sheree Hutchinson, who first came up with the idea when planning her own wedding. She says she was on a modest budget, but wanted something with more individuality and personality than an ordinary route map. Cue the first Cute Map!

Sheree went on to launch her website, and her funky, friendly Cute Maps were an instant hit, with orders coming in from destinations as far afield as Austria, Australia and Beverley Hills, as well as places all over the UK. Each one is personalised to the individual couple and the occasion, whether it’s a wedding, birthday or other celebration. Her whimsical illustrations pick out local landmarks and can also add adorable romantic touches that help to tell the couple’s story. No two are the same, and they make a lovely keepsake.

Cute Map

Cute Map designs are versatile, and can be sent as Save the Date postcards, invitation inserts or even the invitation itself. You can order printed cards, postcards or magnets, or simple order the design and use your own creativity! Some of Sheree’s clients have used the designs on posters, signs, stickers and even tote bags – the possibilities are endless!

The Borders Wedding Show in Kelso was great fun for Get Knotted! As a wedding planner, you sometimes find yourself having surreal moments, and on Sunday it was a case of arriving at Springwood Park accompanied by twiglights, assorted birdcages and a huge Wurlitzer wedding jukebox!

There was a real buzz about the place, and it was lovely to meet lots of brides-to-be and couples, and catch up with some fantastic suppliers. A slightly hair-raising moment was when Hugh Brown from Radio Borders swooped to do a live radio interview – something I’d never done before! I think he was attracted to the Wurlitzer – it’s a huge people magnet, especially for men who – let’s face it – aren’t quite as interested in wedding flowers, frocks and hair!

Borders Wedding Show Get Knotted stand

One of my standout finds was some beautiful glass-handled cake knives made by www.caddondesign.co.uk.   They’re so pretty and would make a a really wonderful wedding gift. It was great to discover they’re made on the doorstep in Selkirk! Cake pops are another big trend, and Love Bites of St Boswells presented some very cute (and tasty-looking!) specimens.  I also love the new photo booth by www.bordersphotobooths.co.uk – more on this very soon in a dedicated blog!

My wedding props also seemed to catch the eye, too – huge thanks to Sheila from Sheila Scott Photography for this pic of the Get Knotted stand in action. If you’re interested in wedding props, and particularly vintage accessories, we have all sorts of stylish items, including candelabras, vintage birdcages and typewriters, twiglights, baskets and pedestals, as well as floral arrangements. And we’re also bringing some eye-catching vintage props, including silver-plated teapots, hand-painted 19th century bowls, and an ancient typewriter for typing messages for the bride and groom – a vintage take on a visitors’ book!

If you’re thinking of getting married in the Scottish Borders, come and say hello on the day! I can offer plenty of great insider tips and practical wedding wisdom, and can also tell you a bit about the four fabulous Scottish Borders wedding venues I work with: Mellerstain House, Hoscote Estate, Aikwood Tower and the Buccleuch Arms Hotel.

A Hoscote House tipi wedding with a green theme was a summer highlight for Get Knotted! This was our first tipi wedding, and the atmosphere was very special and individual. Tonia and Ben, our lovely couple from Newcastle, had a clear idea of what they wanted, and the whole day was very laid back and relaxed – as you might expect from a couple who have been together for 15 years!

Tipi wedding, Hoscote House

The tipis are absolutely magical, and made a wonderful alternative to a wedding marquee. Tonia and Ben had two Sami-style ‘kata’ tipis joined together, making a spectacular silhouette against the backdrop of Hoscote House. Inside was friendly and welcoming, with soaring tipi poles, wooden tables and pretty natural flowers from Wiggly Wigglers carrying through the rustic theme, and a fantastic fire pit which was lit after dinner and threw beautiful flickering shadows on the canvas. The tipis were provided by Highland Tipis, who are bringing a wow factor to weddings all over Scotland with their unusual ‘hat’ tipis.

Tonia and Ben chose to get married under the sweeping copper beech in the Hoscote gardens.  ‘We’d been looking for beautiful wild scenery, a long way from anywhere,’ says Ben, who is a craftsman and cabinetmaker based in Newcastle. ‘Enough modern comforts for older guests, but relaxed enough to throw a great big party for all our friends, where they could all feel at home.’ Solicitor Tonia came across the website after looking for a special wedding venue in the Scottish Borders. Lovely scenery was also a factor when Ben decided to pop the question: ‘4,200m above sea level in the Peruvian Andes, looking down a stunning valley, with a diamond I’d brought out to South America – not perhaps totally spontaneous, but very memorable!’

In keeping with the natural, artisanal theme of the day, Ben also made the cake stand and the cake table, and Borders-based Sizzling Piggy provided a succulent hog roast from their quirky rotisserie trailer with its pigtail-shaped chimney and on-board computer! The Settledown Café in Newcastle manned the barbecue and provided delicious salads, desserts and accompaniments, while the bar was provided by Wilson from the Lauderdale Hotel in Lauder. Excellent music came from The Fabulous Shire Boys – superb multi-instrumentalists who can play everything from ceilidh to funk and have supported top rock and pop artists including Texas, Hue and Cry and Fish.

Tonia and Ben spent their honeymoon travelling around Italy by train, taking in Florence, Pisa, Venice and the northern Tuscany mountains, where, as Ben describes, ‘we kicked back under the clear blue sky for a week in a little stone hut, scrumping fresh figs from the trees. Dumped the hire car and took the train to Venice for a few more days of ‘Bling’ before a slow train back to Paris, England.’ Their ‘little Yorkshire dumpling’ is due to arrive in November, which they say will be a breeze compared to organising a wedding!

All the best for the future to a lovely couple from Get Knotted!

Remember Jukebox Jury?

Before your (and my) time perhaps! But how about hiring your own wedding jukebox to help you and your guests re-live whichever musical eras you’re crazy about?

We have added another service for our wedding clients at Get Knotted and teamed up with the phenomenally successful Betterdaze Juke Box Parties who supply historic jukeboxes from the 50s through to the 70s, together with the biggest collection of vinyl singles (remember vinyl?!) in the UK.  We are now able to supply wedding venues all over Scotland.  They are perfect for a vintage wedding theme and create a really fun talking point.

We’ll fill the jukebox with all your favourites hits and requests and you can have dedications written against particular songs for an extra personal touch.  It’s guaranteed to get the after-wedding party going with a swing.   Choose from music from the 1950s through to the mid-1990s – so anything from Andy Williams to Robbie Williams – and you can get friends and family involved by asking for suggestions and favourite songs.

Betterdaze Wedding Juke Box

There are five different models of the famous Wurlitzer 1015 Dometop Bubbler, which holds 100 7-inch singles, giving you a choice of up to 200 songs from an amazing 30,000+ originally vinyl singles from the last 50 years. For true vinyl buffs, there are also rare records from non-chart artists, including American rock-n-roll and European rock. And if you’re overwhelmed by the sheer choice, we can help out by recommending records around your chosen theme. Maybe a chance to indulge your passion for Northern Soul, 70s Disco, or punk bands?!

No DJ required

The great advantage of your own jukebox over hiring a DJ is that it’s yours for the whole day and into the night if desired and you have control over the volume!  So if you’re planning to party into the wee hours, this is perfect! Great fun, and a style icon of music history that will get the generations talking!

Cakes pops are catching on fast as a tasty and eye-catching alternative to traditional wedding cakes. They look like lollipops, but they’re actually tiny bite-sized cakes – just right if you want to offer your sweet-toothed guests something a bit different, or as a fun extra.
