News

Whilst we don’t like to blow trumpets too loudly, here at Get Knotted we are feeling very excited to share our latest venture.  Years of event styling, and transforming all sorts of wedding venues, from bijou village halls and barns, to grand marquees and stately homes, means that we know our business and have learned a trick or two.  Quite simply we know what works and have been quietly setting trends, here and there. Do you remember our Floral Chandeliers? And what about our funky Taxi Photo Booth?

We have decided to put our knowledge and experience and creative flair to a different use, and are launching a limited range of props for sale, direct to event stylists, venues, and DIY brides.  We have sourced ahead-of-the trend wedding ideas that are perfect for a bespoke wedding style.

We are over the moon about sharing our knowledge to bring you a wonderful line of props for sale that we know will work for you, whatever your venue.  First up the next big thing in wedding chair decor…

Scotland Shop is the brainchild of Anna White and based in Duns in the Scottish Borders.  We were fortunate enough to collaborate with Anna recently on a series of inspirational photo shoots at special wedding venues in the Scottish Borders with the aim of promoting the use of tartan for weddings – and tartan a contemporary twist.

Having made a substantial investment in state of the art technology, Anna and the team at Scotland Shop aim to become a global leader in “e-tailoring”.  The software allows online shoppers to see their chosen item of clothing in one of over a thousand different tweeds and tartans, something that up to now only fashion designers had the tools to do. We get around!

5 Sep 2014

Wow, how quick has the summer gone!  We’ve been very busy with weddings, planning, flowers, photo shoots and more.

With that in mind, we would like to share some of our recent coverage with you:

15 ways a wedding planner can make your day better

Many couples ask themselves whether or not they need a wedding planner.  We wrote an article, featured on Wedding Ideas Magazine’s website, explaining how a wedding planner can make your day better.  If you are undecided, have a read here.

This was also featured on bride the wedding site.

Hot new blooms

A beautiful peach, green and cream shower bouquet was featured in the May issue of Perfect Wedding Magazine.

Time to bloom

We made a romantic necklace from Pepita roses and Hypericum berries for a photo shoot and this was featured in the August/September issue of Wedding Magazine.

2

White flowers

We were very excited when we were invited down to London for a photo shoot on white flowers.  We made a hand-tied bouquet, a wedding ring nest, a delicate buttonhole and a pretty table centre.

3

Birds of a feather

The Best Scottish Weddings Magazine regularly features us.  We have been asked to do a number of photo shoots this summer as well.  The birds of a feather feature in the Spring issue, included our peacock feathers and emerald green bouquet.

4

Bold and Beautiful

As well as the peacock bouquet, Best Scottish Weddings Magazine also featured some of our styling images as the main image in their bold and beautiful page.

5

Totally tropical

With a tropical theme, the lovely magazine, Cornish Brides featured a display of flowers in our cups and saucers, which are available to hire.  They also mentioned the cups and saucers in their ‘and finally…’ page.

6

There is plenty more coming up, so keep your eyes peeled.

Have your wedding featured

If you would like to have your wedding featured on the wedding blogs or in magazines, please let us know and we will put you in touch with them – don’t forget to mention us!  Please email Lindsey on Lindsey@get-knotted.net.

The Borders Wedding Show in Kelso was great fun for Get Knotted! As a wedding planner, you sometimes find yourself having surreal moments, and on Sunday it was a case of arriving at Springwood Park accompanied by twiglights, assorted birdcages and a huge Wurlitzer wedding jukebox!

There was a real buzz about the place, and it was lovely to meet lots of brides-to-be and couples, and catch up with some fantastic suppliers. A slightly hair-raising moment was when Hugh Brown from Radio Borders swooped to do a live radio interview – something I’d never done before! I think he was attracted to the Wurlitzer – it’s a huge people magnet, especially for men who – let’s face it – aren’t quite as interested in wedding flowers, frocks and hair!

One of my standout finds was some beautiful glass-handled cake knives made by www.caddondesign.co.uk.   They’re so pretty and would make a a really wonderful wedding gift. It was great to discover they’re made on the doorstep in Selkirk! Cake pops are another big trend, and Love Bites of St Boswells presented some very cute (and tasty-looking!) specimens.  I also love the new photo booth by www.bordersphotobooths.co.uk – more on this very soon in a dedicated blog!

My wedding props also seemed to catch the eye, too – huge thanks to Sheila from Sheila Scott Photography for this pic of the Get Knotted stand in action. If you’re interested in wedding props, and particularly vintage accessories, we have all sorts of stylish items, including candelabras, vintage birdcages and typewriters, twiglights, baskets and pedestals, as well as floral arrangements. See the wedding prop gallery for more ideas!

Get Knotted wedding venue Mellerstain House has been singled out for The Telegraph’s list of the 10 Best Stately Homes in Britain – the only stately home in Scotland to make the list! The Telegraph article highlights Mellerstain’s popularity as a wedding venue, its beautiful location and stunning artworks:

‘About eight miles north of Kelso, in the Scottish Borders, Mellerstain was designed by Robert Adam and is adorned with classical plasterwork friezes, paintings, embroidery and a fine collection of china and furniture. A terraced garden lies at the rear, and its picturesque lakeside location makes it a popular wedding venue.‘

Get Knotted is especially delighted that Mellerstain has been included alongside such British jewels as Blenheim Palace near Oxford, Castle Howard in Yorkshire, Longleat House in Wiltshire and Chatsworth House in Derbyshire as the only Scottish representative on the Telegraph’s prestigious list!

Mellerstain has also been the spectacular backdrop for several wedding fashion shoots for leading wedding directories. For more wedding photos from Mellerstain, see our gorgeous gallery!

Get Knotted is thrilled to introduce the newest (and oldest!) of our wedding venues in the Scottish Borders: historic Aikwood Tower near Selkirk.

Aikwood Tower was for many years the stylish home of Lord Steel and his wife Judy, and has now been lovingly renovated by their son Rory as an exceptional venue for weddings, events and gatherings. The 16th century tower is in the heart of Borders reiving country in the Ettrick Forest, just 40 miles south of Edinburgh, and is perfect for intimate weddings of up to 40 guests. It can also easily accommodate larger weddings with a marquee on the lawn and or in the courtyard. The gorgeous grounds include a wall garden, orchard and terrace, and the whole setting is wonderfully peaceful and private.

Rory and his wife Victoria have overseen the refurbishment with great care and respect for the tower’s quirks and charms. Each room is a delight, with unusual period features, wonderful work by local craftspeople and artists, and luxurious boutique styling. All facilities are state-of-the-art, and designed for outstanding comfort. It’s a thoroughly endearing place, steeped in history and romance, and will be the talk of your guests for years to come!

For larger weddings, Aikwood has excellent relationships with local hotels and B&Bs, who can provide special rates for guests travelling from further afield. We also work regularly with a range of fantastic local suppliers. Visit the Aikwood Tower website for more on the story of this fabulous wedding venue, and its long connections with the worlds of literature, politics and even magic! And take a look at Get Knotted’s other beautiful wedding venues in the Scottish Borders.

Scottish Borders Registrars say it’s business as usual, while changes continue to improve local registration services. Lisa Lauder, the Council’s Chief Registrar, says it’s all part of a review which will consolidate all the local offices.

‘We now have ten offices instead of 13, and a team of 11 fully trained and qualified registrars, instead of some of the part-time offices and marriage celebrants we had before. The closure of the Selkirk office means you’ll now be served by Galashiels, while Jedburgh services are now being handled from Hawick – both full-time offices. Lauder is also closing at the end of June, but you can contact our Melrose office, which is open 4 times per week.’

‘If you want to know more, you can ring the main number, 0300 100 1800, or contact your local Registration Office directly’. (See numbers below)

Lisa says it’s important to contact Registrar Services as soon as you know you’re getting married, whether you’re going for a religious or civil ceremony.

‘Your date may be many months – even years – ahead. We’ll be able to advise you on timescales, documents you need, and how much it will cost, as well as guide you through the legalities. It’s also worth knowing that costs vary depending on which date and time you hold your ceremony.’

Lisa says registrars can also help couples to personalise their ceremony. ‘You can make it much more meaningful to you and your family by including readings, poems, special music and special words that can make all the difference. There are obviously some words which must be said in order to keep on the right side of the law, but there are plenty of ways to for you make your ceremony really personal’.

There’s more information, including a checklist of what to do, on the Scottish Borders Council website at www.scotborders.gov.uk/registrars.
